Tranquility in Jardín Japonés

Japan has a special place in our hearts as it was the destination for our honeymoon. On moving to Buenos Aires I was excited to discover we were only a 15 minute walk away from the Jardín Japonés. During a sunny morning in May I visited with my three year old and we were delighted to find a space of tranquility amongst the lively streets of Palermo.

It's easy to feel relaxed as you enter the gardens as every sense is given enveloped in an aura of calm. Your ears soak up the zen inspired music, your eyes are soothed by the pleasing symmetry of the garden, your nose is introduced to a pleasant array of aromas from the fauna, your taste buds are satisfied by the sweet treats in the restaurants and your hands can be kept busy trying or perfecting origami.

For little legs there are plenty of benches around the main walkways and tiny minds will be mesmerised by the Koi carp. My little one found the environment so soothing a little nap was needed on one of the benches by the water!

Top tips for visiting with a little one:

  • Buggy: There's plenty of space on the main walking routes for buggys, you might find it tricky to navigate the bridges but you won't miss out if your buggy is too wide for these.

  • Toilets: There's a toilet block halfway round the main walking route around the edgy of the water and another one within the restaurant block. Both very clean and easy with a toddler and changing facilities available for babies.

  • Food: In the restaurant you'll find quick bites, sweet treats and a more substantial lunch menu. There are plenty of soft drink options for young ones. We took our own snacks and it was fine for my little one to eat these in the grounds.

  • Getting in: You can pre-book tickets online for a very small price and you can also pay on the door. You might see a queue outside the gates but this moves quickly so don't let it put you off trying to get in.

  • Best time to visit: Visit when you're in need of some downtime and a safe place for your little one to let off some steam. It does get busy so it's good to visit first thing or towards the end of the day. Personally I prefer to visit when the weather is sunny, it doesn't need to be warm but I think you can appreciate the full impact of the garden in clear weather rather than rain.

  • Nearby: Jardín Japonés is located near Plaza Aleman where you'll find a fabulous playpark and Sicily Square a beautiful park for picnics. Just down the road you'll find the Ecoparque, another great place to visit with little ones.
