A taste of Wales in Trelew
A number of things drew us to visit Trelew. As Brits we were curious to see the Welsh influence and with two little ones we wanted to see the spectacle of the largest dinosaur skeleton from 95 million years ago (which was found in Trelew).
We travelled to Trelew from Puerto Pirámides, just under a two hour drive which takes you along Route 3 and past a replica of this dinosaur, the Patagotitan mayorum. This beast stands proudly just at the side of the road, it’s easy to pull in (under it’s looming shadow) and hop out to get a closer look. It’s so lifelike that our children were a bit reluctant to get close at first!
After saying ‘ciao’ to the dinosaur we headed into town and visited the X museum. This is a small museum and manageable for those with shorter attention spans! ADD MORE INFO
A wander round the town is worth it to see the various sculptures inspired by Wales including dragons and daffodils. It felt nostalgic to explore Welsh inspired gift shops too - akin to a National Trust gift shop! At the time we visited, and at the time of writing, the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (where the massive dinosaur skeleton is housed) was closed for refurbishment and we’re sure this will be a must see once it’s open again so keep an eye on when that will be!
We finished our day in Trelew in the Ty Gwyn tea house. Hand on heart the best cup of tea I’ve had in my life. You’ll find that most tea houses will be both busy and geared up for tourists with tourist prices. Most offer a package similar to an afternoon tea with cake and scones with a cost per person. We went for this option and we weren’t charged for the children.
Did you know? The name Trelew means "people of Lew" in honor of Lewis Jones, an early Welsh settler in the Chubut province.
Top tips for visiting with a little one:
Buggy: It’s easy to get around with a buggy in Trelew, although the pavement might get narrow or too bumpy in places it’s not too disruptive.
Getting around: For those with little legs the hill up to the X museum is a bit steep so a piggyback might be needed.
